New York State Marine Highway Transportation Company--Buoy Request, 2016

One modern maritime business works in the waters off Red Hook without docking here, that is New York State Marine Highway, usually referred to in the business as "Marine Highway." They operate tugs and barges, and in 2016, requested permission for a mooring off our shore towards the southern end of the Bay Ridge Flats (aka the Red Hook Flats). Such requests are handled by the US Army Corps of Engineers. "Marine Highway" requested 4 commercial mooring points, one of which is off Red Hook.

Two-three barges are tied up at a time at the mooring. 90% of barges on that mooring have come thru the Erie canal system. The barges are moving aggregate (sand and stone products).

Most of the vessels on the mooring will not show up on our map because barges do not carry the AIS system, only the tugs do, but the barges will be visible from shore.
